Danish Naval Historical Time Line

Events marked with a indicates, that the day is also a Danish National or Military Flag Flying Day.

 December

1st

1967

The Naval Material Command is established. Rear Admiral S. J. Valentiner is appointed the first Chief-in-Command.
The former 6 technical departments of the navy are to be integrated into this new organization.

2nd

1977

The frigate HERLUF TROLLE becomes the first Danish ship to perform a planned launch of a HARPOON training missile.

3rd

1952

The torpedo boat HAVØRNEN (ex. T 53) runs aground at Scroby Sands off Great Yarmouth, England, during an exercise.
The torpedo boat is salvaged during January 1953 and later refitted for active duty.

4th

1990

The submarine SÆLEN sank off the island of Hesselø during a towing form Copenhagen to Aarhus.
The submarine was salvaged on December 17, and later refitted for active duty.

14th

1911

The Naval Aviators Service is established. Lieutenant Hans C. Ullidtz is appointed the first leader of the first Naval Flying School.

14th

1918

The torpedo boat SVÆRDFISKEN, Lieutenant Ole H. Quaade, is hit by a mine during sweeping a German mine field in the southern part of the Great Belt ("Storebælt").
8 men are killed at the explosion.

21st

1815

The brig BORNHOLM, Commander Ulrich A. Schönheyder, on tour to the Mediterranean and the West Indies 1815-1817,  makes peace with Tripoli, causing that several crews, held as slaves, were released.

21st

1939

Commander s.g. F. H. Kjøllsen is appointed the 1st Danish Naval Attaché at the Royal Danish Legation in Berlin, Germany.

24th

1811

The British ships-of-the-line ST. GEORG and DEFENCE, of the British fleet in Danish waters commanded by Vice Admiral Sir James Saumarez, ran aground off Torsminde at the west coast of Jutland and where lost.
Around 1,400 men are lost.

28th

1908

The light cruiser HEJMDAL, Commander J. H. Schultz, on tour to the Mediterranean, is bringing relief aid to the casualties after the great earthquake at Messina, Sicily.

31st

1917

The Submarine and Sea Plane Flotilla is established. Captain T. A. Topsøe-Jensen is appointed the first commander.
