Danish Naval Historical Time Line

Below you will find a listing of all Sea Accidents and Losses in the Royal Danish Navy (after 1814) and Royal Danish-Norwegian Navy (until 1814).

Accidents and losses as a result of enemy actions are not included in the listing.

 January

2nd

1918

The mine vessel LOSSEN runs aground near Omø in the Great Belt, only 20 meters from land. The ship is first back afloat on February 19. Only minor material damage.

7th

1974

The navy harbor tug FREMAD V capsizes and sink during a tow of the frigate HERLUF TROLLE at Naval Station Frederikshavn.
Two crew members from the tug drowned.

11th

1961

The Patrol Vessel EGENÆS runs aground off Odden harbor in Northern Zealand.
The vessel was scrapped and the wreckage sold.

13th

1955

The frigate VALDEMAR SEJR collides with the Swedish freighter M/S SIGWARD.
Only material damage to both ships.

20th

1782

The frigate BORNHOLM, commanded by Commander Mathias Bille, on a tour to the Danish West Indies manage to reach New Port Prat on the Irish Northwest Coast after 4 weeks of gail force winds and 6 days of hurricane force wind in the North Atlantic.
130 crew members are seek, and the CO dies.

25th

1957

The naval cutter TERNEN, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Erik Erling Olsen, are lost off Ravns Storø in Greenland, presumably caused by icing conditions.
The whole crew of 8 officers and men are lost.

29th

1946

Minesweeper ME 1016 runs aground off Jernhatten at the southeast coast of Djursland, Jutland.
The ship could not be salvaged, and the wreckage was sold for scrap.

 February

14th

1842

The brig ALLART is lost between Portorico and St. Jan off the Danish West Indies. The crew is salvaged.

19th

1909

Cruiser HEJMDAL collides in dense fog off Helsingør with the British S/S ASTRAKHAN of Liverpool. No casualties, but severe material damage. The cruiser was due after one months repair.
The British Master is later charged for the incident.

24th

1860

The paddle steamer SLESVIG catches fire. The engine room and forward compartment are burned out.
The ship is repaired and reenter service.

26th

1951

The torpedo boat RAAGEN (former. T 59) is lost in the North sea after collision a the British MTB (MTB 5518). RAAGEN is salvaged later this year and repaired.

 March

7th

1979

The minelayer FYEN runs aground off the Norwegian island of Toftöy in the Bokna Fjord. Were lifted of ground and heading for immediate repair in Stavanger by tug toats.
Later towed to Svendborg Ship Yard for final repair, estimated cost around 10 million d.kr.

27th

1963

The Fast Patrol Boat TRANEN, Lieutenant Commander Kaj Thygesen, sinks after a collision with the Norwegian cutter TRYGG, off Stavanger, Norway.
All hands are saved, the FPB is later salvaged and scrapped.

28th

1953

During entrance to Rønne harbor an explosion occurred in the engine room on board the mine layer LOUGEN, commanded by Lieutenant, count, Karl-Christian Trampe.
3 men are killed and another 7 were severely injured.

 April

13th

1964

The frigate ESBERN SNARE collides with the Soviet trawler ANAPA in the Sound. The trawler sank immediately after the collision, the crew of 23 are rescued by the Danish frigate.

18th

1980

The Minelayer FYEN collides with a Soviet MIRKA-class frigate in the Baltic.

27th

2006

The surveying vessel SKA 11 runs aground in the Arsuk Fjord in Greenland. The crew is saved by the sister ship SKA 12.
The vessel sank during the salvage operation on May 3, 2006, and is now laying on 300 metres of water.

2nd

1975

A heavy fire breaks out on board the submerged submarine DELFINEN off the coast of Norway.
The crew manage to put out the fire, and the sub are towed into the Norwegian Naval Base at Haakonsvern.

4th

1843

The brig ST. JAN leaks during a storm in the Sound. After repair the ship continues north, but has to go to Flekkerøy, Norway after another leak.
The brig is repaired and returns to the Naval Dockyard in Copenhagen, where she is being decommissioned  and scrapped June 26.

5th

1951

The cutter Y 341 (ex P 8), later MHV 67,  sank after collision wiht the steam ship BEATRIX in Copenhagen Harbor. Later salvaged and reentered service.

7th

1966

The cutter SKARVEN runs aground and is completely lost at  Mjovanes, Suderoye, The Faeroe Islands.

12th

1839

The brig ST. JAN is rammed by a Swedish bark in Skagerrak.
The brig is towed to Copenhagen for repair.

13th

1965

The arctic cutter MALLEMUKKEN runs aground on an underwater skeery on a tour from Nuuk to Sisimiut in Greenland.
The cutter was stucked for 9 hours, but could continue on high tide.

14th

1981

The corvette OLFERT FISCHER is strucked by a fire in the engine room during initial sea trial off the coast of Bornholm.
After nearly two hours of fire fighting the corvette returned to Copenhagen.
The fire delayed the planned commisioning of the corvette from May 25 to October 16, 1981.

25th

1923

A demonstration of a phosphorus generator is held on board the cruiser GEJSER, Commander Godfred Hansen; more than 50, mostly officers are wounded, when an explosion occurred. - 1 officer later died from his wounds.

27th

1995

The guard vessel Y 375 (BOTVED Class) sinks in the Kattgat after a fire on board. The vessel is later salvaged and scrapped.

 June

3rd

1753

The frigate FALSTER, Captain Hooglant, catch fire og explode at the Saffia Road off Morocco.
132 crew members are lost in the blast.

10th

2006

The surveying vessel SKA 12 runs aground off Maniitsoq in Greenland during a transit. Nu injuries, but the vessel suffered minor damage to the hull and was docked for repair.

11th

1874

The gunboat BUHL, commanded by Lieutenant F. C. Irminger, runs aground in Hornbaek Bay and is wrecked, all hands are saved.

20th

2006

The naval cutter Y343 LUNDEN collides off Sjaellands Odde in Kattegat with the Danish fishing vessel KA 7 YVONNE. No injuries reported.

25th

1784

The ship-of-the-line INDFØDSRETTEN, Commander s.g. Lütken, is declared lost after failing to reach Tranquebar in India in June 1782.
One of the ships boats and the name plate were found on the Southern Coast of Iceland in 1783.

 July

7th

1956

The Royal Yacht DANNEBROG runs into the British frigate HMS REDPOLE. No persons were injured, but the bowsprit on the Royal Yacht was broken.

8th

1980

An East German Mine Sweeper of the KONDOR-Class rams the Danish Home Guard Cutter MHV 94 just south of Gedser.

14th

1982

The frigate HERLUF TROLLE is strucked by a severe fire in the main engine control room causing severe material damage.
Two persons, a navy staff sergeant and a private first class are later decorated for their engagement. Damage repair costed the sum of almost 23 million Danish kroners.

23rd

1994

The Naval Cutter VEJRØ is rammed by a container vessel in the Fehmern Sound. Several crew members suffer light injuries, the ship is however seriously damaged.

26th

1832

During gunnery exercises in the Skagerrak on board the frigate NYMPHEN, one of the guns explodes. 4 naval Cadets and 6 able seamen are injured, two of them seriously.

27th

1898

The armored schooner ABSALON is accidentally torpedoed by the torpedo boat SØBJØRNEN during a naval exercise. The schooner is grounded, and after interim repair returning to the Naval Dock Yard for repair.

28th

1566

After a naval battle off Oland in the Baltic the combined Danish-Lübeck fleet is anchored off Visby. A heavy storm drifts 12 Danish and 3 Lübeck ships a shore, and the ships are wrecked.
4,300 men drowns, including the admirals Hans Laurtisen Baden, Jens Trudsøn Ulfstand and the Lübeck admiral Thinnapel.

 August

6th

1952

The Naval Cutter Y 340 (ex P 5), later MHV 55 sank after collision with the ferry BROEN in Nyborg Fjord. All hands were rescued.
The cutter was later salvaged, repaired and reentered service.

12th

1833

The schooner PILEN capsized and sank on guard duties in the Great Belt, all crew members were saved.
The scooner was salvage om August 14, and returned to service.

17th

1904

The torpedo boats HAVHESTEN and STØREN collides in Musholm Bay in the Great Belt. The HAVHESTEN sinks, but are later salvaged, STØREN suffers only minor damage.
No losses of human lives.

20th

1889

Torpedo Boat No. 10 capsizes in the Sound. The boat sinks during tow back to Copenhagen. Salvaged the same day and towed to the Naval Dockyard. Reentered service.

26th

1898

Torpedo Boat No. 5 is rammed by the steam ship DOKTOR SIEGLER of Danzig and sinks the the southern part of the Sound.
One crew member drowns.

28th

1908

While at sea, an explosion occurred inside the forward 15 cm gun onboard the cruiser HEKLA at sea, killing one and seriously wounding another five.

 September

4th

1957

The torpedo boats FLYVEFISKEN and HØGEN (ex. T 55) collides during an exercise in the Storebælt.
The torpedo boat HØGEN sank immediately; while the FLYVEFISKEN, heavily damaged, was towed to Korsoer tied alongside the frigate ROLF KRAKE.

8th

1840

The frigate BELLONA collides with a French logger in the English Channel. The logger sinks and 4 of the crew members are reported missing, while 4 crew members are brought to Le Havre by a British Pilot Vessel.

9th

1970

The submarine NARHVALEN, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Peer Rasmussen, is reported missing in the Skagerrak after missing radio check.
SUBMISS is established, and a large number of ships, aircrafts and helicopters start a search for the missing sub.
The missing sub is located by the tender HENRIK GERNER at around 5 o'clock in the morning on September 5.

16th

1889

Torpedo Boat No. 9 runs aground in the Sound.
The boat is salvaged on the 18th and reenter service.

18th 1981 Naval Home Guard Cutter MHV 68 ran aground off Laesoe in the Kattegat. The cutter sank during the following salvage operation during the next day.
The wreck was sold and later demolished.
21st 1979 The submarine SPÆKHUGGEREN capsizes during overhaul at the Naval Dockyard in Copenhagen, and is partly filled with water. After nine months repair, the sub returned to operative status.

29th

1780

The ship-of-the Line PRINS FRIDERICH is lost off the island of Laesoe in Kattegat.

29th

1979

The submarine SPRINGEREN, during overhaul at the Naval Dockyard in Copenhagen, is partly filled with water, due to an open hydrant.

30th

1901

The gunboat MØEN, Commander Rørdam H. Kjølsen, explodes in the Sound, following new trials with explosive shells.

 October

6th

1948

The arctic patrol cutter ALKEN (ex. P 1) and its crew of 8 vanished off the East Coast of Greenland. 3 weeks of and intensive search and rescue mission gave now clues.

9th

1916

The first Danish submarine, DYKKEREN, commanded by Lieutenant Svend Aa. Christiansen, is ran into by a Norwegian freighter and sank in the Sound, while on a submerged training exercise.
The commander drowns, while the rest of the crew are saved.

14th

1955

The minesweeper GRAADYB (ex. ML 1) was strucked be an explosion at the Naval Dock Yard at Holmen, causing a large hole in the bow. The ship was not repaired and decommissioned.

25th

1930

The submarine TRITON was strucked by an explosion. All the batteries, one of the periscopes and the radiostation was completely destroyed.
Cost of repair approx. d.kr. 500,000.

 November

4th

1801

Caused by a hurricane in the Kattegat the Ship of the Line LOVISA AUGUSTA lost most of the rigging. The ship managed to return to Copenhagen.

5th

1799

The ship-of-the-line OLDENBORG, Commander s.g. Olfert Fischer, escorting a convoy to Tranquebar in India, is set aground off the Bay of Taffel during a hurricane. The crew is saved. Several foreign ships are also lost in the hurricane, and several crew members are lost.

16th

1959

While leaving Copenhagen, the torpedo boat tender HJÆLPEREN for unknown reasons blocked the entrance to the harbor, causing a collision with the Finnish freighter CERES.

Great material damage, but no personal injuries.

 December

3rd

1952

The torpedo boat HAVØRNEN (ex. T 53) runs aground at Scroby Sands off Great Yarmouth, England, during an exercise.
The torpedo boat is salvaged during January 1953 and later refitted for active duty.

4th

1990

The submarine SÆLEN sank off the island of Hesselø during a towing form Copenhagen to Aarhus.
The submarine was salvaged on December 17, and later refitted for active duty.

7th

1967

The submarine DELFINEN, CO Lieutenant Commander P. B. Nielsen, collides with an unidentified object during surfacing, just to the North West off Skagen.
The sub suffered only material damage, including a bended periscope.
The Swedish fishing trawler MÄLARÖ is later reported missing, and her crew of four are found the following day, frozen to death in their life raft.

14th

1918

The torpedo boat SVÆRDFISKEN, Lieutenant Ole H. Quaade, is hit by a mine during sweeping a German mine field in the southern part of the Great Belt ("Storebælt").
8 men are killed at the explosion.

18th

1903

A major fire caused major material damage on board the armored ship IVER HVITFELDT, while at the Naval Dock Yard in Copenhagen for an overhaul. No injuries.
The following repair took place during the winther months.

21st

1929

The Patrol Vessel THOR was wrecked in Hunafloi in Iceland during a storm, the complete crew were salvaged.

29th

1799

The frigate HVIDE ØRN, Lieutenant Commander van der Osten, is lost with all hands, during a hurricane off Corsica in the Mediterranian during convoy duties.
