1932 |
In
accordance with the new Naval Act, the newly established Coastal Command ("Kystdefensionen"),
commander, Captain Briand de
Crèvecoeur, is taking over the coastal fortresses from the Army. |
5th |
1866 |
The navy is bought the country's first diving gear. |
5th |
1916 |
The
German submarine U20, that sank the LUSITANIA, runs a ground
off the west coast of Jutland. All attempts to salvage the sub failed and
the sub is scuttled by its own crew. |
12th |
2001 |
The corvette
NIELS JUEL leaves Naval Base KORSØR
to join the NATO forces in the Mediterranean; the main task of the joint
force, is the fight against international terrorism in Operation ACTIVE
ENDEAVOUR. |
17th |
1869 |
The
frigate SJÆLLAND, Captain Rasmus C. Malthe Bruun, participates in the
opening of the Suez Canal, together with 40 other men-of-war from different
countries. |
20th |
1939 |
The Navy Supreme Command ("Søværnskommandoen") gives the orders to place
mine fields in the Storebælt, between
Langeland and Lolland, and in Lille Bælt between Als and Ærø. |
23rd |
1951 |

mines explodes at the Mine Workshop at Naval Base Copenhagen, caused by a
fire.
16 persons lost their lives, mainly firemen from the Copen-hagen Fire
Department and Falck's Rescue Services.
Almost every building belonging to the Naval Mine Warfare Department in the
area were flattened. |
25th |
1878 |
The frigate SJÆLLAND, Captain Johan C. Kraft, arrives the Danish West
Indies to stop a negro uprising.
The uprising is brought to a hold. |
25th |
2004 |
The
last two Danish subs,
SÆLEN and
SPRINGEREN, are decommissioned, marking the end of 95 years with
subs in the RDN. |
30th |
1992 |
The
Defense' Medal ("Forsvarets Medalje"), instituted November 27, 1991,
is awarded for the first time at a ceremony at Naval Base Copenhagen.
Among the recipients are the crews from the corvette
OLFERT FISCHER, awarded for their participation in the UN embargo in
the Persian Gulf.. |
