On Tuesday, November 6, the Danish Defense Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) took delivery from Faaborg Shipyard of the first of a total of six new standard vessels of the so-called Mk II type, after several months' delay.

Originally, the first vessel was to have been ready for operational duty from the end of April 2007. In December of last year that was changed to the end of August, and was subsequently further delayed to November 30, 2007.

Having undergone a variety of sea trials and final fitting out in the yard over the last month, the first vessel was ready for delivery to the Danish Navy.

Ready by Christmas

In a weeks' time, Tuesday, November 13, the vessel will be sailed to Korsør, where various items of military equipment are to be installed. That is expected to take about a month.

According to DALO, it is planned that the new vessel, P520, will be named in Korsør on Wednesday, December 12, when the ship is to be certified fully-operational.

There is naturally considerable excitement over the new name, not least because the first vessel will give its name to a whole new class of vessels.

There is no official word yet on when the remaining five vessels will be commissioned into the Danish Navy. Everything suggests that previously-announced timetables will slip, but navalhistory.dk will of course report the latest.

The new Mk II-type standard vessels are to replace the more than 40 year-old BARSØ class patrol cutters. Their role will consist primarily of surveillance of territorial waters, maritime rescue and other maritime assistance tasks.
